Labiaplasty or labia minora reduction is one of the most common procedures performed at our plastic surgery unit. It is the most frequent genital cosmetic surgery.
Medical information
Labiaplasty is indicated for adult women with hypertrophy or asymmetry of the labia minora that causes soreness or discomfort.
During our initial consultation, we will assess your general state of health. An examination will determine the length, thickness, symmetry and shape of the labia minora in order to reshape the external appearance of the vulva. Don’t forget to mention if you have any allergies to any medications or any illnesses, if you are a smoker, or if you are taking any medications or vitamins.
Explain your expectations. We will be completely clear about the alternatives and the advantages, risks and limitations of the possible treatments. You will be given full instructions on how to prepare for surgery, the fasting time required prior to surgery, and medications to avoid, as well as guidelines for taking antibiotics and other medications that are important for an optimal outcome.
We will explain the type of anaesthesia we usually use, the clinic where we perform the procedure, and the costs involved.
On the day of the operation, you need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
| Labiaplasty consists of the removal of the excess of the labia minora, either along the entire length or at the lower two thirds. Subsequently, the vaginal mucosa is remodelled to achieve the definitive appearance.
The duration of the surgery is 40 minutes. Where is the surgery performed?Your operation will be performed in the clinic’s operating theatre where the entire team of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers will ensure that you receive excellent care before, during and after the procedure. This is usually an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to leave the hospital after a few hours. | You will need to rest for a day, without putting any pressure on the sutures. You will be able to resume normal everyday life without exertion after two or three days.
You should wear comfortable cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing. Unusual skin sensations and most of the swelling will subside in about three weeks. The sutures fall out on their own in two to three weeks. |

Labiaplasty is a safe procedure. However, as with any operation, there are risks associated with surgery and specific complications associated with this technique.
As with any surgical procedure, bleeding after the operation can cause swelling and discomfort. There is a small risk of bruising which may require evacuation of the accumulated blood.
A small percentage of patients may develop an infection. This can occur at any time, but is most common in the first week after surgery. Although rare in this type of surgery, there is a risk of wound dehiscence (separation) if subjected to excessive traction.
The vast majority patients who undergo a labiaplasty do not suffer from the complications described, however, it is important that they are aware of them. We always explain these in detail in the pre-operative consultation to ensure patients know the benefits and risks of this procedure which generally gives a very high degree of satisfaction.
After two to three days, you can return to work. Sexual relations can be resumed after four weeks.
