Rhinoplasty
Facial Cosmetic Surgery
Rhinoplasty can increase or decrease the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the nostrils, or alter the angle between the nose and upper lip. It can also correct congenital disorders, repair the effects of trauma or acquired deformities, and solve some respiratory problems.
If you are considering rhinoplasty, Dr Jordi Mir will provide you with all the information you need about the surgery, in which cases it is recommended, how it is performed and what results you can expect to achieve.
Medical information
Ideal rhinoplasty candidates are those wishing to improve their appearance.
If you are in good general health, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations, you will be a good candidate. Rhinoplasty will improve your appearance and self-confidence but will not make you look like someone else or be treated differently.
Age is also an important factor. It is advisable not to have rhinoplasty surgery before you are fully grown, i.e., until the age of 14 or 15 for girls and slightly older for boys. It is also important to consider the emotional and social changes in adolescents, and to be sure that it is them, and not their parents, who want to undergo rhinoplasty.
The operation will be performed in the clinic’s operating theatre where the entire team of doctors and nurses will ensure that you receive excellent care before, during and after the procedure.
It is generally advisable to stay at the clinic for the first night after surgery, and to leave the day after. Dr Mir uses general anaesthesia for this procedure. During surgery, the skin on the nose is separated from the bone and cartilage, which is sculpted to the desired shape, and then the skin is put back in place. |

After surgery, especially during the first 24 hours, you may feel swelling in your face, discomfort over your nose and a headache, which subsides with medication. You should remain in bed with your head elevated for the first day (except to use the bathroom). You will notice that the swelling and bruising around the eyes increases to a maximum after two days.
Applying cold compresses will reduce the swelling and make you feel better. In any case, you will already be feeling better than what you may look like at this stage. Most of the bruising and swelling will disappear in about two weeks (minimal swelling, almost only noticeable to your surgeon, may last for a few months). A slight nosebleed is normal for the first few days. You should not blow your nose forcefully for the first two to three weeks, until it has healed inside. If you have nose plugs in, they will be removed in one to three days, after which you will feel much better. After a week, the splint and stitches (if any) will be removed. Most rhinoplasty patients feel fine within two days and can return to work or school in about a week. However, certain activities where there is a risk of contact should not be carried out for a few weeks. You will be given precise instructions by Dr Mir. The main recommendations are to avoid strenuous activities (running, swimming, doing push-ups, etc.) for two to three weeks, avoid bangs to your nose and sunbathing for four weeks, wash your face and apply make-up carefully. You can wear contact lenses again as soon as you want, but if you wear glasses certain precautions should be taken. Dr Mir will make appointments with you during the weeks and months following surgery to monitor your progress. If you have any discomfort between appointments or any questions about what you should or shouldn’t do, feel free to contact us at any time. |

When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are rare and minor. However, there is always a small risk of complications, such as infection, nosebleeds, or reactions to anaesthesia. Risks can be kept to a minimum by carefully following Dr Mir’s guidelines both before and after surgery. There are no problems related to scarring, as the incisions are on the inside of the nose; even in open rhinoplasty the scar is unnoticeable. Approximately one in ten cases requires follow-up surgery to correct minor defects.
During the first few days after surgery, the face is swollen and bruised, so it is easy to forget that your appearance will improve quickly, and many patients may feel a little overwhelmed; but this is completely normal. Improvements in appearance occurs daily and patients are quickly encouraged by this. In one or two weeks, it won't look like you've had surgery. The improvement is progressive and gradual, although minimal swelling may persist for a few months especially at the tip of your nose. Definitive results are obtained in approximately one year.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct nose deformities. It mainly consists of modifying the bony and cartilaginous structures of the nose to achieve a new shape that improves facial harmony. When the deviation of the nasal septum is also corrected to improve respiratory function, it is called rhinoseptoplasty. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Dr Mir cuts and shapes the nasal bones and cartilage to achieve the desired shape. Sometimes incisions are also made at the base of the nostrils. To help shape or support the nasal pyramid, different tissues from the patient's own body (cartilage, bone) are often used as grafts.
After the operation, which usually lasts about an hour, a nasal packing is placed in the nose, which is usually removed the following day, except if a septoplasty has been performed, in which case it is left in for two or three days. A plaster splint is also applied to the nose, which is kept in for a week.
Some postoperative swelling and ecchymosis (bruising) is common but usually subsides within a week. Most patients will be able to return to normal in about 8-10 days.
No judgement can be made about the outcome of rhinoplasty surgery until several months, even a year, have elapsed because this is the time required for the tissues to stabilise and the scars to mature. The goal of rhinoplasty is to achieve a "new" nose that does not attract attention but is fully integrated into the general context of the face, producing a harmonious and pleasant effect, so that it is not possible to detect that it has been operated on.
Occasionally, either due to serious initial anatomical alterations, tissue healing disorders, post-operative trauma, etc., the result is not perfect (asymmetries, irregularities in the nasal contour, etc.) and a surgical touch-up may be necessary, in which case it will be carried out after six months.
