The ideal candidate for a rib reshaping is a woman. However, there are also men who sometimes ask for it, to make the back appear wider in relation to the rest of the body.
In the case of women, it is usually those who have very prominent ribs or a short trunk. This operation can make the waist look noticeably narrower.
It is also indicated for individuals who suffer from ailments such as scoliosis or pectus excavatum, or whose body has certain asymmetries. This surgery is able to improve the functionality of the area. People who are in the process of reaffirming their gender from male to female are also good candidates. Costal remodelling is part of body feminisation.
Patients requiring significant weight loss should postpone surgery, as should patients who intend to have future pregnancies, because the vertical muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened during surgery and may relax again in the course of further pregnancies. If the abdomen has scars already, this surgery may be inadvisable or the scars may change position. In some cases, this surgery manages to eliminate them.

Rib reshaping is a surgical procedure based on the partial or complete removal of the 11th and 12th ribs. These ribs are called ‘floating ribs’ because they are not attached to the sternum, unlike the other ribs, but end in the lower back. They are the last ribs and there are two on each side of the chest. Sometimes they can protrude too far in front, creating a straight torso effect.
This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and may involve removing part of the ribs and repositioning them.
Recovery from rib remodelling can last between 1 month and 6 weeks, a period that will require relative rest. After the first week, it is possible to start walking gently, always with caution. This will help to avoid fluid accumulation.
During the days following surgery, it is common for the patient to experience some pain and discomfort. These symptoms will be relieved by taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, which will be prescribed by the doctor.
It is advisable to sleep on your back with a couple of pillows, so that you remain slightly inclined. Do not sleep on your stomach or on your front during the postoperative phase, as the area may suffer and worsen with the pressure exerted.
All surgeries carry certain risks for the patient. Before taking the plunge, it is important to carry out a thorough medical evaluation and take into account the possible side effects of the operation. The most common risks of a rib reshaping are: infections, bleeding, visible scars or asymmetries in the area. In addition, it is normal to suffer some pain during the first few days, although this is manageable with medication.
