What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic and painful condition. It involves an abnormal accumulation of subcutaneous fatty tissue in the legs, or even in some people in the arms, which causes a disproportionate increase in volume, as well as tingling, pain, varicose veins, heaviness, bruising, and the appearance of cuffs. The cause of lipedema is still unknown to scientists; however, it is thought to have a hormonal component and is also hereditary.
What does lipedema surgery involve?
Lipedema surgery is performed using the PAL (Power-Assisted Liposuction) technique, or vibration-assisted liposuction in Spanish. This method involves making small incisions through which cannulas are inserted, which break up the fat cells using vibrational discharges.
Once the fat liquefies, it is extracted without damaging the lymphatic and venous systems, causing the skin to retract and decreasing volume in the extremities.

Lipedema treatment results
This operation is indicated for any woman suffering from lipedema, with a clear diagnosis and a previous history of the disease. It is the most effective treatment for people who want to improve their lifestyle, relieve symptoms, and regain mobility in their extremities. This operation is not only aesthetic but also functional.
The doctor will perform a general medical checkup, blood tests, and a lymphatic system examination on the patient before undergoing surgery. The latter is essential, as lipedema is sometimes confused with lymphedema. A correct diagnosis of the condition is important; otherwise, the patient’s condition could worsen. The doctor will also recommend certain guidelines to follow before the procedure, such as not smoking, drinking, or taking certain medications.
For 48 hours after lipedema surgery, the patient must remain in the hospital under supervision and rest. It is recommended to drink plenty of water, avoid smoking or alcohol, and wear compression stockings to prevent blisters and redness. In addition, a physical therapist will perform three to five lymphatic drainage massages per week to relieve congestion in the area and speed recovery. Excessive exertion is not recommended, but walking a little each day is advisable.
The results after lipedema surgery are not only related to appearance, but also to functionality.
- Better quality of life.
- Reduction of volume and localized fat.
- Relief from pain and tightness of the dermis.
- Elimination of heaviness in the extremities.
- Greater body mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have lipedema?
There are certain symptoms that may suggest a person has lipedema. The most common are: disproportionate swelling in the legs, hips, and arms; a feeling of heaviness and tingling in the legs; the appearance of bruises and spider veins; and difficulty losing weight. However, a clinical diagnosis is essential to determine the cause.
How is lipedema different from lymphedema?
Lipedema and lymphedema are two conditions that are often confused. Both cause leg swelling, but for two different reasons. Lipedema is due to the accumulation of fat, while lymphedema is related to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid.
What is the cause of lipedema?
To this day, the causes of lipedema remain a mystery. But everything points to hormones as the underlying cause. In fact, the condition typically manifests during puberty and worsens during pregnancy or menopause, due to the significant hormonal changes that occur in the body during both stages. The good news is that lipedema surgery improves the patient’s quality of life by relieving pain, eliminating heaviness, and reducing the volume of the limbs.
