Calf Augmentation
Medical information
This surgery is indicated for patients who do not succeed in shaping the area as desired despite physical exercise, for those with asymmetries, congenital malformations of the legs, or for people with hypoplasia in the area (secondary to neurological diseases such as poliomyelitis).
This is usually achieved by means of calf lipofilling (or fat transfer) or calf implants.
Ideal patients for calf augmentation surgery are healthy, emotionally stable individuals who understand the results that can be achieved with surgery.
Currently, the most commonly used technique is lipotransfer or fat grafting. In some cases where there is not enough fat, implants are used.
In the first consultation, we’ll assess the size and shape of the calves, the firmness of the skin and your general state of health. Here we’ll discuss the size and shape we want to achieve. We’ll talk you through the different surgical techniques, and the best options for each patient. We always like to clarify why we choose one technique over another for each individual.
Pre-operative examinations are required for these procedures.
What type of implants are used?
We recommend high cohesive silicone gel implants. Dr Jordi Mir only uses top quality calf implants.
We fit either round or anatomical (drop-shaped) implants. Our philosophy is “we achieve beauty through naturalness”.
Why these implants?
We believe in, and are committed to quality. Not all cosmetic surgery products are the same. We are committed to cosmetic products backed by science and with proven efficacy. We will not consider anything other than the best product for our body.
The history, quality and reputation of the calf implant manufacturer are very important, in terms of the experience in manufacturing calf implants and the guarantee they offer.
Worldwide trust in the product goes hand in hand with knowledge and experience through use.
The operation will be performed in the clinic’s operating theatre where the entire team of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers will ensure that you receive excellent care before, during and after the procedure.
This surgery is performed under general anaesthesia or epidural and lasts for one to two hours. Dr Mir uses fusiform implants made of highly cohesive silicone gel. An incision is made in the crease at the back of the knee and the implant is placed between the calf muscle and the skin. However, lipofilling is currently the preferred technique and the one we use most. |

Patients are hospitalised for one day.
Two days of rest is required, swelling of the leg and bruising are normal. Normal activity with little exertion can usually be resumed after 7 days. Patients should refrain from doing sport for at least one month. To guarantee your well-being, during the first week we will recommend treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. |

Calf augmentation is a very safe procedure, provided it is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon.
Short-term complications are very rare and tend to be those typical of any surgery: bruising, infection, changes in the sensitivity of the operated area.
In the long term, the most common complication is capsular contracture, which occurs when the internal scar that forms around the implant contracts excessively, causing the calf to stiffen. This currently occurs in about 2– 10 % of patients. It may require reshaping of the internal scar and/or implant replacement.
Breakage of a high-cohesive silicone gel implant is very rare. Should this occur, it will need to be replaced with a new implant.
As plastic surgeons, we pay great attention to all the factors that influence these potential complications and do everything in our power to prevent them. However, despite our best efforts, there is always the possibility that any of these could occur. Here is it important that patient and surgeon form a team and work together to obtain the best possible result under the circumstances.
With the correct analysis of each patient, realistic expectations and expert surgery techniques, results are very predictable, and patient’s expectations can easily be met with excellent results for each individual’s aesthetic goals.
