Breast Augmentation
Dr. Jordi Mir is a plastic surgeon specializing in breast surgery, including breast augmentation and reduction.
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, aims to improve the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. This procedure involves placing breast implants beneath the breast tissue or pectoral muscle to enhance volume. At Jordi Mir Clinic, we customize the implant size, type, incision location, and surgical technique to suit each patient.

Risks of breast augmentation
This procedure is ideal for women with small breasts, loss of volume post-pregnancy, or breast asymmetry. To achieve desired results, breast implants are typically used.
Candidates for breast augmentation should be healthy and emotionally stable individuals who understand the realistic outcomes of the procedure.
During the first consultation, we evaluate the size and shape of your breasts, skin firmness, and overall health. A thorough breast examination is conducted, and patients over 35 may need a mammogram or breast ultrasound for a more accurate diagnosis before surgery.
We discuss desired breast size and shape during this evaluation. Dr. Mir explains available surgical techniques and recommends the most suitable options based on the patient’s unique characteristics. Every decision, including implant selection and techniques, is clarified to the patient.
Types of breast implants
We recommend high-cohesivity silicone gel implants. Dr. Jordi Mir exclusively uses top-quality implants guaranteed for life in cases of rupture and, in some cases, for capsular contracture. Depending on the patient’s needs, we offer different types of implants:
- Round implants: Provide greater projection at the upper breast. The result is a more youthful, voluptuous appearance. Used in both breast augmentation and mastopexy.
- Ergonomic implants: Adapt to body movements, offering a natural look both at rest and in motion.
- Anatomical implants: Known as teardrop-shaped implants. Achieve a natural, less pronounced breast augmentation.
Our philosophy is “We achieve beauty through natural results.”
Why choosing these implants?
At our breast augmentation clinic in Barcelona, we prioritize quality. Not all breast implants are the same. We believe aesthetic products should be backed by science and proven effectiveness.
The history, quality, and reputation of implant manufacturers are essential, along with their expertise in implant production and guarantees. Global trust in the product goes hand-in-hand with our knowledge and experience in its use.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately one hour. The surgeon makes a small incision, typically in the areola, under the breast fold, or in the armpit. Through this incision, the implant is placed either beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular plane using the dual-plane technique) or beneath the outer fascia of the pectoral muscle (subfascial plane). This decision depends on the patient’s breast tissue and desired results.
After the procedure, a compressive bandage and a post-operative bra are applied. No drains are required.
Hospitalization lasts for one day. Patients must wear a sports bra 24/7 for the first 30 days. Sleeping with the head slightly elevated (using three pillows) and on the back is recommended during the first month.
Patients can resume daily activities without physical exertion within 4 to 7 days and moderate physical activity after 2 to 3 weeks, depending on each case. For comfort, we prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatories during the first week.
After one week, we remove the suture left in each breast. Dr. Mir also recommends scar care using pressure therapy and hydration, which will be fully explained.
Breast augmentation is a very safe procedure when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Short-term complications are rare and include general surgical risks like hematomas, infections, or sensitivity changes in the treated area.
In the long term, the most common complication is capsular contracture, occurring when the internal scar tissue around the implant tightens excessively, making the breast feel firmer. This happens in about 1% of patients today. Addressing this issue may require scar remodeling and/or implant replacement.
Ruptures of high-cohesivity silicone gel implants are very rare. If it happens, replacement with a new implant is necessary. While complications are always possible, patient and surgeon collaboration ensures the best outcome under any circumstance.

Our patients say…
Frequently asked questions about breast augmentation
How long is the recovery process?
Recovery time varies for each patient. The first month is critical, during which you must avoid intense activities and wear a post-operative bra all day. Most patients can resume normal routines in 4 to 7 days, while moderate exercise should wait at least two weeks. Swelling and discomfort may last several months but will gradually subside.
Do implants affect breastfeeding?
In most cases, women who have undergone breast augmentation can breastfeed without issues. However, this depends on the surgical technique used and implant placement. If you’re considering breastfeeding in the future, discuss this with Dr. Jordi Mir during your pre-operative consultation.
How long do implants last?
Modern implants are designed to be durable and resistant but are not lifetime devices. While they don’t have a specific expiration date, some patients may need revision or replacement after about 10 to 20 years. Factors such as capsular contracture or implant rupture may require earlier intervention.
How is the implant size chosen?
Choosing the right implant size depends on factors like body proportions, breast type, and patient preferences. During the pre-operative consultation, Dr. Jordi Mir will help you select the best size based on your goals and physical characteristics. We also use different implant size trials at the clinic for a better idea of the expected results.
What are the risks of this surgery?
Although breast augmentation is a safe procedure, risks include infections, hematomas, nipple sensitivity changes, and capsular contracture. Dr. Mir will discuss all possible risks and preventative measures with you during the consultation.
Can breast augmentation be combined with other aesthetic procedures?
Yes, many patients combine breast augmentation with other procedures like body lift or Vaser lipo for a more comprehensive transformation. This is common in “mommy makeovers,” where patients aim to restore their pre-pregnancy appearance. If you’re interested in combining procedures, consult Dr. Jordi Mir to evaluate the best options for you. Contact us! The first visit is free.
