Buttock augmentation (or enlargement) aims to improve the size and shape of the buttock (either because it is small, sagging, or due to a loss in shape or symmetry). This is usually achieved by means of buttock lipofilling<\/em> (or fat transfer or grafting) or buttock implants..<\/p>\n

Lipofilling or implants?<\/h3>\n

On an international scale, the tendency leans towards lipofilling for buttock surgery. The main reason is that it achieves better results, with fewer complications, and uses the patient’s own tissue.<\/p>\n

Implants tend to be used only on very slender patients, who do not have enough fat to remove.<\/p>\n

Lipofilling is a two-part surgery. The first part is very similar to liposuction: fat is removed from the desired area(s). This fat is then treated in order to separate the fat cells (adipocytes) from the serum. The second part consists of implanting these adipocytes in the receptor tissue (in this case the buttock) using cannulas that make tunnels in the buttock tissue (both in the fat and in the muscle).<\/p>\n

Approximately 30% of the implanted tissue is reabsorbed (disappears). This explains two things: the tendency of plastic surgeons to over-correct the area treated and the reason a new lipofilling may be required after a few months.<\/p>\n

It is a very safe, low complication and painless technique.<\/p>\n

What type of implants are used?<\/h3>\n

If you have lipofilling, you can lean on your buttocks, but it is better to use a pillow on your sides and another one under your thighs for the first three weeks to put minimum pressure on them. You can start walking normally from the first day.<\/p>\n

In the case of buttock implants, for the first week we recommend you only lie on your stomach. You should not sit down or lie on your back. In the second week you can start taking short walks. In the third and fourth week you can start sitting on soft surfaces.<\/p>\n

\nButtock augmentation is a very safe procedure, provided it is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon.<\/p>\n

In the case of buttock implants special care must be taken with the inter gluteal wound, due to the risk of dehiscence.<\/p>\n

Short-term complications are very rare and tend to be those typical of any surgery: bruising, infection, changes in the sensitivity of the operated area.<\/p>\n

In the long term, the most common complication is capsular contracture, which occurs when the internal scar that forms around the implant contracts excessively, causing the buttock to stiffen. This currently occurs in about 2\u2013 10 % of patients. It may require reshaping of the internal scar and\/or implant replacement.<\/p>\n

Breakage of a high-cohesive silicone gel implant is very rare. Should this occur, it will need to be replaced with a new implant.<\/p>\n

As plastic surgeons, we pay great attention to all the factors that influence these potential complications and do everything in our power to prevent them. However, despite our best efforts, there is always the possibility that any of these could occur.
